Kiwis at US Colleges
Kiwis at US Colleges
Because I'm an anorak I started having a dig around because I've never heard of Anthony Hobbs and I fancy myself as a massive know-it-all (as forum regulars will attest).
Anyway. Sounds like Master Hobbs is a decent player. He's a 6 foot defender at a fairly average NAIA College in quite a nice part (I'm told) of America.
What's been annoying though is that I think he was in the 2007 U17s that played in South Korea. You wouldn't know though - because NZF's website doesn't carry any info on past squads.
Jeremy Ruane's ugly but valuable Ultimate NZ Soccer site has info on results but not a squad list. The best bit being this photo of the 1999 U17s feat. Lochhead, Mully et al: http://www.ultimatenzsoccer.com/NZRepSoccer/id160.htm
Fortunately FIFA came to the rescue: http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/u17worldcup/korea2007/teams/team=1882393/squadlist.html
Hobbs was in the same 17s as 1 Barba 2 Barba 3 Barbarouses, Chris Wood, and a whole sh*tload of kids now playing at College (O'Keefe, Corliss, Hunt, and I think Cowen and Myers). He was one of the youngsters in the squad (1991 instead of 1990) but still played 2 of the 3 games, including a good portion of the 7-0 thrashing by Brasil.
Sadly, they also did a haka: http://www.fifa.com/tournaments/archive/u17worldcup/korea2007/teams/team=1882393/photolist.html#579791
Anyway. There's a bit more about him. Good luck to the lad.
When you think about how badly that team performed at the 17s - (5-0 loss to England and 7-0 loss to Brasil) and then how far many of those players have gone since it gives you heart to think about the most recent U17s performance and where some of those players might be in two years.
We dont know what were doing.
That's part of the point. The college competitions in the US are far stronger than our stupid premier leagues. Anyone that wants to further carrer in soccer has to go overseas to where ever. There are some very good players overseas that have been totally ignored - perhaps a couple that are superior than a couple of our current All Whites.
The under 17s in Korea were not good, however there are enough really good players for the next U20s if chosen and coached correctly.

Anthony Hobbs is the son of Keith Hobbs who had a long national league carreer as captain of North Shore in the eighties. Also represented All Whites with 8 full caps from 1980 -85. So the pedigree is there.
Anthony represented United Soccer 1 throughout all all of the grades, also toured the UK with the NZ Secondary schools team in 2009
Played regularly with the Glenfield Rovers first team from the age of 16
Well known for his Rory Dellap type throw ins.

Ugly, eh?
Smithy, seeing as Ultimate was conceived, developed and has been lovingly maintained by myself without any aspects of its general appearance changing since it was launched exactly eight years ago yesterday (7 Dec 2001), I'd be more than happy if you were to fork out for a full site appearance-only make-over by some of these website geeks.
Because of the cost of such an exercise, I'm quite content with the functional look - it's what I can afford, as I'd sooner invest what funds I do have to spare into the women's game.
As for the absence of a squad list, BZZZ! Wrong answer! The link below will reveal every NZ squad to have played at a FIFA Finals tournament:

If such a page couldn't be found easily, perhaps it's not THAT functional
Still a bloody good site though

Update on Anthony's achievements

he had the mvp award this year with the florida international university and will be an important player for nZ if they qualify to u20 wc next year:

Anthony has only completed one year, made the freshman team for his conference and the 3rd conference team. Hard to do when the team does not do well. Has now been made captain (1st time ever for a freshman) 1st outing as captain played MLS team in their preseason, won 1-0. Hopefully he will get drafted perhaps next year however most have to wait till finishing college before getting a draft. Depends on how well FIU gets on this year. That is his aim.![]()

Guys this thread is now nominated as the thread for Kiwis at US colleges as per the feedback received on reorganising this forum.
Cheers JD
In addition of James Mcpeake there is another kiwi player who signed with Fairleigh Dickinson University which is jordan cooper:

3 South Islanders playing for St Francis (PA) in the North East conference. Patrick Fleming, Seamus Ryder and James Price. Fleming leading goalscorer so far this season.
Tom Jackson at Marshall University (C-USA) doing well by the looks of things. 3 Goals and 5 assists so far this season.

Defender/midfielder playing under scholarship at Florida International University - was scouted in Wales/Ireland with secondary school team in November last year. He got an offer from 2 university scouts at the games. Florida seemed attractive. He has been named in the Akron Tournament Team(tournament held preseason between highly ranked university teams), in his own conference 3rd team and in his conference "freshman" team. This is extremely prestigious considering his own Florida uni team did not do that well in the competition, yet he was standout to be named in these teams. Has now been the first freshman ever to be offered the captaincy. The level of football is NZFC. 2 games per week, training daily.
I think Anthony Hobbs could go all the way for NZ
